Bastia

Eglise St Jean

In the 14th century, the Genoese decided to move the residence of the governors from the site of Biguglia, which was very exposed to external attacks, to a rocky promontory located above a fishing village (Portu Cardu) where they built a bastion and then surrounded it with a citadel. It then developed from this bastion

Today Bastia has many districts: U Mercà (the market), U Vecchju Portu (the old port), Monserattu, …

A stroll through the citadel, the governor’s palace, the old port, the old market square, the old town, the Saint Nicolas square and its numerous churches (Saint Jean Batiste, the Immaculate Conception, Sainte Croix, etc…) is always a spectacle for the eyes and the taste buds.

Without forgetting the Aldilonda which will offer you a ballade under the citadel and above the sea.

Small Port of Favone Beach

Favone

A nice walk to the small port of the beach of Favone
This small port has always welcomed fishermen and their huts, present for several decades.

First Orlando who installed a statue of the virgin on the rocks to protect the place and who moved from Solenzara with his very recognizable three-wheeler and today Jacky continues this activity with his cheerfulness and his good mood.

During the Second World War, the Italians had installed a battery on the rocks and during the liberation of Corsica, a submarine destroyed this battery and part of the rocks, making this small port much less protected from storms.

Fautea Tower

Tour Génoise Fautea

The Fautea tower has three levels: a cistern at the base, a room for the guards on the second level and a terrace on the third level, crowned with machicola

It is part of a defence system set up by the Republic of Genoa between the 15th and 16th centuries to counter barbarian attacks consisting of those charged with watching the horizon, lighting a fire at the top of the tower in case of invasion.

The fire was visible from the previous and next tower, which in turn lit a fire at their top. This system allowed the whole coast to be warned quickly and the inhabitants to take cover before the invaders arrived.

This system allowed the entire coast to be warned quickly and the inhabitants to take cover before the invaders arrived.

Lime was used to seal the stones used in its construction and the remains of the kiln used to produce the lime are still visible on the left of the tower below.
